Are You Ready to Move to Mexico? 7 Signs You Are

If most of these sound true for you, a Mexico Reality Check session is the honest next step before you commit to anything bigger.
The Question Every Prospective Expat Asks
'How do I know if I'm actually ready?' comes up in nearly every initial consultation. There's no perfect checklist, but after guiding thousands of people through this decision, seven signs reliably predict who follows through and settles in well, versus who stays stuck in research mode indefinitely or moves and struggles.
1. You've Actually Visited More Than Once
Readiness isn't about loving a one-week vacation. It's having visited your target city at least twice, ideally in different seasons, and still wanting to live there once the vacation glow wears off.
2. Your Finances Can Handle a Bad Month
You don't need to be wealthy, but you should have 3-6 months of expenses in reserve and a realistic budget for your target city specifically. If your finances are stressed in your home country, they'll likely stay stressed in Mexico, moving doesn't fix an underlying budget problem.
3. You're Motivated By What You're Moving Toward
Successful movers can articulate what they want (lower cost of living, better weather, a slower pace, cultural richness) rather than only what they're escaping. Pure escape motivation, without a clear picture of the life you're building, tends to produce disappointment when Mexico turns out to have its own set of everyday problems.
4. You're Comfortable Being a Beginner Again
You'll struggle with basic tasks, banking, ordering food, understanding a form, that you handled effortlessly at home. Readiness means being emotionally prepared for that regression rather than being derailed by it.
5. You've Researched the Visa Path That Actually Fits You
You know whether you qualify for Temporary or Permanent Residency based on income or savings thresholds, and you understand you must apply at a consulate before entering Mexico. Vague plans to 'figure out the visa once I get there' are a common source of costly delays.
6. You Have a Flexible Timeline
The best movers give themselves 3-6 months of runway for the transition itself: finding housing, completing the residency canje, opening accounts. Rigid timelines (needing everything settled in two weeks) create unnecessary stress on top of an already complex process.
7. You're Excited, Not Just Relieved
There's a real difference between the anxious relief of 'anywhere but here' and genuine excitement about Mexico specifically. If you notice mostly the former, it's worth spending more time researching and visiting before committing, the excitement tends to be what carries people through the inevitable hard weeks of any relocation.
If most of these describe you, you're likely more ready than you think. If several don't, that's useful information too, it points to exactly what to work on before you go, rather than a reason to abandon the plan.
