Every January, Mexico updates the numbers that decide who qualifies for residency, and 2026 brought the biggest structural change in years. This is the numbers post: what the UMA is, the 2026 values, how the math works, and the fee increases nobody enjoyed. Bookmark it; I update this analysis as the figures change.
Once you've confirmed you meet the thresholds, a Visa Strategy Call and my document checklist cover the rest of the process together.
What Is the UMA and Why It Now Runs Everything
The UMA (Unidad de Medida y Actualización) is Mexico's inflation-indexed reference unit, published by INEGI each January and used for fines, fees, and official calculations. For years, residency solvency was tied to the minimum wage, but with minimum wage rising ~12% annually for political reasons, requirements were exploding. Following a July 2025 federal announcement, consulates have shifted to UMA-based calculations for 2026, which rise with inflation (~3–4%) instead. Net effect: the bar stopped skyrocketing.
The 2026 UMA Values
Daily UMA:$117.31 MXN (up 3.69% from $113.14 in 2025), published January 8, 2026.
Monthly UMA:$3,566.22 MXN.
Annual UMA:$42,794.64 MXN.
What That Means in Dollars: 2026 Thresholds
Approximate USD figures at current exchange rates, consulates quote in local currency and their conversions vary:
Temporary residency, income route:~$4,400 USD/month over the previous 6 months.
Temporary residency, savings route:~$74,000 USD average over the previous 12 months.
Permanent residency, income route:~$7,300–7,400 USD/month, and in 2026, direct-from-abroad permanent residency is effectively limited to retirees and pensioners.
Permanent residency, savings route:~$294,000 USD, steep, which is why most people take the four-year temporary path instead.
Remember: it's income OR savings, not a blend, and couples can apply as a family unit on one partner's finances.
The 2026 Fee Doubling
Separately from the UMA switch, Mexico's Congress passed a law in November 2025 that roughly doubled government processing fees for residency cards effective January 1, 2026. This hits new applications and renewals alike, the one-year temporary card, the multi-year renewals, and permanent cards all cost about twice what they did in 2025. Family-unit applicants get a 50% discount on government fees, which softens the blow for couples. The exact peso amounts adjust with official publications, so verify current fees on INM's schedule or with your facilitator when you file.
The Fine Print That Catches People
Consulates aren't uniform:some still reference older minimum-wage math or set their own documentation bars. The consulate's published requirements are the only ones that matter for your application.
Exchange rates move the goalposts:a strengthening peso quietly raises the USD equivalent of every threshold. The 2025–2026 peso appreciation did exactly that.
Renewals now face the new numbers:existing temporary residents renew under 2026 thresholds and fees, in person, within 30 days of card expiry.
Statement quality matters:clean, official, consistent statements, same account, no big unexplained transfers, get approved. Screenshots and crypto wallets don't.
Planning Around the Numbers
If you're just under the bar, you have options: wait for a favorable exchange-rate window, consolidate scattered accounts twelve months before applying so the savings route reads cleanly, apply as a family unit, or restructure income so it lands as regular deposits. This is precisely the kind of chess my Visa Strategy Calls exist for, the requirements are rigid, but how your finances present against them is not. The people who get denied usually didn't fail the math; they failed the paperwork.
