Getting a Mexican Driver's License as a Foreigner: 2026 State-by-State Guide

Do You Need a Mexican Driver's License?

Short answer: if you drive regularly in Mexico and plan to stay longer than 6 months, yes. Most Mexican states legally allow foreigners with valid foreign licenses to drive for up to 6 months (or the length of their visa). After that, a Mexican license is technically required. Practically, enforcement varies — but for insurance purposes, auto financing, and legal protection in accidents, having a Mexican license matters. Additionally: some Mexican banks and government offices require a Mexican driver's license as an accepted form of ID when your residency card isn't sufficient.

Requirements (Most Mexican States)

Standard documentation across most states: Valid residency card (Temporary or Permanent). CURP. Proof of address in that state (utility bill or rental contract). Current foreign driver's license (in some states). Passport. RFC (some states require it, others don't). Blood type documentation (required in many states — get a blood type card from any lab, ~$10). Medical certificate (vision test and basic health check, typically done at the licensing office for $5–15). The process: Fill out application form → Pay licensing fee ($20–50 USD depending on state) → Pass vision test → Get photo taken → Receive license.

The Written Test: Reality vs Expectation

Most Mexican states do not require a written test for license renewal or for foreign nationals with a valid home country license. Some states (CDMX, Jalisco) have simplified online tests. A few states may require a basic Spanish-language test — if yours does, the questions are straightforward (basic traffic signs and rules). Paul's Guanajuato experience: No written test required. Vision test, documentation, payment, photo. Done in 45 minutes.

Costs and Duration by State

License fees (2026): $20–50 USD. Duration: Most states issue 2-year licenses; some 3-year. Renewal is similar to initial application. CDMX has a 3-year license option. Always get the longest duration available. Important: your Mexican driver's license is issued by the state where you live, not federally. If you move states, you may need to exchange for a new state license. The 90-Day Concierge program ($599) covers Mexican driver's license process as part of the full first-90-days setup.
