Why I Built Free Tools Instead of More Articles

After years of consulting calls, I noticed the same pattern: people don't stall on information — the internet has plenty — they stall on translation. What does a $4,500/month consulate threshold mean for MY bank statements? What does 'affordable' mean for MY spending habits? What city fits MY non-negotiables? Tools answer 'you specifically' questions that articles never can. So I built three, and they're free because they're the same first steps I'd walk you through in a paid session anyway.

The Cost Calculator: Your Budget, Not the Internet's

Most Mexico cost-of-living numbers online are either influencer fantasy ('I live on $800 a month!') or fear-mongering. The calculator works differently: you feed it your actual lifestyle — housing standard, eating habits, healthcare needs, travel frequency — and it maps that against real 2026 prices across major expat cities. Use it twice: once configured as your current life transplanted, and once as the leaner version you'd actually accept. The honest number is somewhere between, and now you have a range instead of a guess.

The Visa Checker: Which Route Fits Your Numbers

The visa checker takes your income, savings, age, and situation and tells you which residency routes you plausibly qualify for under current consulate practice — temporary residency, permanent, or family-based — and flags the borderline cases where consulate choice matters most. Two minutes here saves people the most common expensive mistake I see: planning an entire move around a visa route they don't actually qualify for yet.

The City Match Quiz: Narrowing 15 Cities to 3

Mexico's expat destinations differ more than most people expect — a Mérida person and a Guanajuato person and a Playa del Carmen person are usually three different people. The quiz scores your priorities (climate tolerance, walkability, expat density, budget, healthcare access, airport needs) against the cities I know firsthand and hands you a shortlist worth researching deeply, instead of fifteen cities researched shallowly.

How to Use All Three Together

  • Start with the Visa Checker — qualification shapes everything downstream

  • Run the City Match Quiz to get your three-city shortlist

  • Run the Cost Calculator for each shortlisted city with your real lifestyle inputs

  • Read my Essential Guide for each finalist city — then plan scouting visits with an actual hypothesis to test

If your results raise more questions than they answer — borderline visa numbers, two cities in a dead heat, a spouse with a different quiz result — that's precisely when aCity & Neighborhood MatchmakerorVisa & Immigration Strategy Callearns its keep. The tools get you to a smart shortlist; the calls get you to a decision.
